Abstract

A concussion return-to-participation protocol specific to equestrian is critical in the safe return of athletes to their respective discipline. At the time of submission, no specific concussion management protocol has been adopted or approved for any discipline of equestrian. In 2017, the Sport Science Institute of the National Collegiate Athletic Association released updated recommendations on concussion management in intercollegiate athletics. When the care of the hunter/jumper equestrian teams became the responsibility of the Sports Medicine staff at XXX College, a return-to-ride concussion management policy was needed. Due to limited experience with equestrian by the Sports Medicine Staff, collaboration with the Riding Center staff was vital in the creation and compliance of the protocol. Availability of a specific protocol for equestrians would allow for consistency in care among healthcare providers. The purpose of the PDSA cycle is to provide athletic trainers and other healthcare providers with an insight on the creation of a concussion return to participation guide for equestrian athletes. Using a traditional five-day program as an example, the “Return-to-Ride” protocol created is seven days of gradual riding for equestrian athletes to account for physical demands and vestibular disruptions associated with equestrian.
